Look at the following sentences.

#1. New York is colder than Los Angeles.
#2. It is colder in New York than in Los Angeles.

Which is more frequently used?
Is there any difference in meaning?

Choice #1 is more common to me.

There is not really a difference in meaning. Only thing I can think is the reference of "it," but that involves a complete context shift. So, like I said, there is no difference in meaning.
