What is a word stem? Is this root, prefix, suffix, affix?
Thanks.

I usually hear "stem" with languages like Spanish and Japanese, but my guess is that the meaning is close to a root. It's like the stem of a plant, where the leaves are attached to the stem--with words, the leaves are the prefixes, suffixes, etc. So with a stem like "nation," you can make national, nationalism, international, multinational, nationalization.
That's my guess--there might be some other definition of "stem." |

Concord is composed of com-, together, + Latin cor, heart, (stem cord). Dictionaries say stem cord. Are there any difference between root and stem? Is it interchangeable?
Thanks a lot.
