Please, help me correct the sentences. Thank you so much

1) The biggest single hobby in America, the one that Americans spend most time, energy and money, is gardening.

the answer is "That". please, correct what it should be

2) Working by chemical reaction, and being independence of atmospheric oxygen, rockets are used to power interplanetary space vehicles.

The answer is "independence". why? please, correct for me. thank you

aha! I finally got this one. It took me a while because I forgot these tests are for the kind of English we don't use in every day speech. I think the correct sentence should be "The biggest single hobby in America, the one on which Americans spend [the] most time, energy and money, is gardening.

The word should be "independent," an adjective, and not "independence," a noun.
