Hello everyone.
The following passage is by an American journalist based in Japan.
In the last several decades, another option has been gaining popularity: surrogate motherhood. Simply put, this is when a woman carries a baby for somebody else, to whom she will give the baby as soon as its born.
My questions are:
1. Is when natural in the second sentence?
2. If it is, how about where instead of when?
Best regards,

Hi fw,

"When" is the correct word to use. If you used "where", it would sound literally like where she carries the baby (in the womb). This is not the intent of the sentence. The second sentence is trying to explain surrogate motherhood by describing the process - not where it happens.
