Hello. I'm not a grammar expert, but I'll try to explain how I see this. "Where" could be used and understood here, but "in which" is a better choice because it makes the link (between "narrative essay" and "the writer explores the subject") very clear and specific.

As soon as I read or hear "where," I start thinking about what the "where" might be. My mind starts looking for the "where," waiting for another place or idea to be introduced. But the "in which" tells me to keep my mind on "a nonfiction composition" and the additional information that is to follow about "a nonfiction composition" (indicated by that "in which"). "In which" tells me WAIT...MORE INFORMATION IS COMING.

I hope this helps a little. Americans often use "where" in similar situations, but "in which" is more formal and a better choice when you are taking a test!
