"How long have you had your dog?" means you have a dog now. If the answer is "four years," for example, it means you got the dog four years ago.
"How long did you have your dog?" means you don't have a dog now. If the answer is "four years," for example, it means you owned the dog for four years in the past, but I don't know which four years. |
