Which is appropriate for the blank below, #1 or #2?

Mortimer Adler explains the ( ) of reading in his book.
1. value
2. worth

Any comment would be appreciated.

Best Regards,
fw

Hi fw,

If I had to pick, I would pick #1.
- Mortimer Adler explains the value of reading in his book.

However, the preposition "in the book" sort of dangles in the end and should be moved closer to the word it modifies, "explains."
- In his book, Mortimer Adler explains the value of reading.

I would say it more elegantly (without sounding too pretentious):
- In his book, Mortimer Adler extols the virtues of reading.

Even though it sounds fancy, this construct is actually quite common.
