| After reading an article, what's the difference between writing the article's main idea and summarizing the article? who can tell me? Thanks. |

Hi Stevenwu,
An article or essay's main idea is its thesis. It may or may not be explicitly stated. The thesis is usually backed up by facts or arguments. The thesis is usually contained in the first paragraph and/or in the concluding sentence(s).
When you are summarizing an article or essay, you are usually itemizing the main points. An outline is a useful tool for this purpose. Sometimes a summary may be a summarizing paragraph. It could even be one sentence. A good summary will contain all the main points.
