My questions were as follows
1.Arsenal were deservedly beaten 2-1 by Leeds.
1) What does 'Arsenal' mean in the above?
2) Why is 'were' used instead of 'was' even if 'Arsenal' is singular?
3)Can you paraphrase the above?
2.I'd like to go back to the point that was made earlier.
1)What does 'the point that was made earlier' mean in the above?
2)I'd like you to paraphrase the above sentence.
Your answer was as follows.
Arsenal and Leeds are English soccer (football) teams
In this case you could use singular but I think most sports teams are referred to in the plural
Paraphrase. Arsenal played badly and as a result were defeated by Leeds
There is no point made earlier in this sentence.
In your reply, I couldn't understand 'There is no point made earlier in this sentence.'
Can you explain the meaning 'There is no point made earlier in this sentence'? |

I didn't understand what you were referring to.
I thought this had some relevance to the first question but now I can see that this may not have been the case.
To paraphrase
I'd like to go back to the point that was made earlier.
You (or somebody else) talked about an issue earlier in the discussion and now you would like to talk about it some more.
Hope that helps and sorry about any confusion |
