Can we say: Two boats drifting drifted apart.
I mean, two boats were drifting and in the same time they drifted apart because of it. It would be kind of play on words to better remember new words.
best wishes Wojtek |

Hi Wojtek1,
Try:
Two boats began drifting apart.
The boats started to drift apart.
You only need one "drift."
