Hello everyone.

Which is more appropriate, #1 or #2, for the blank in the dialogue below?
1. were
2. are

[SITUATION]
A is hosting a party at his home. Hes trying to do a little matchmaking for his close friend Sarah.
A: Sarah, see that man standing over there? His name is Alan. He wants to get to know you.
B. Tell him Im already taken.
A: I just told him you ( ) available!
B: Im not interested.
A: You cant judge a book by its cover.
B: Its not that. Im still trying to get over my ex-boyfriend.
A: Youve got to move on, Sarah. Life is short!
B: Well, Im sadder but wiser.
A: Okay, have it your way.
B: Well, on second thought, he seems quite nice.

Any comment would be appreciated.

Best regards,
fw
