To temper something means to make it less extreme.

This means that she realized that her romantic ideas were often unrealistic.
Here are some more examples of the use of this meaning for temper:
For young and foolish offenders, the state will usually temper justice with mercy.
He was forced to learn to temper his impetuosity and behave with more care.
