I don't know what prepositions I shouls use in the following sentences and what right are.

1. The ship is on / in / at the sea.

2.They swim on / in / at the sea.

When to use in the sea / at sea (or at the sea?)/ on the sea? What are the differences?

Thank you.

The ship is at sea (no article). While it's true that the ship is on the surface of the sea, at sea means on a sea voyage. So you can say "John was at sea for 3 months", and people will understand that he was in a ship far from land for 3 months.

2.They swim on / in / at the sea.
They swim in the sea. They cannot be on the sea, because that would mean on top of. You swim in the sea, in the ocean, and in a swimming pool.

I hope that helps you. Smile
