Some time ago somebody asked what a knickerbocker glory was, as mentioned in one of the Harry Potter stories.

Quote:
They ate in the zoo restaurant, and when Dudley had a tantrum because his knickerbocker glory wasn't big enough, Uncle Vernon bought him another one, and Harry was allowed to finish the first.
--Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

I have been meaning to reply, for a knickerbocker glory has long been a favourite of mine. And it seems that it is not well known in the States

A knickerbocker glory is a very elaborate ice cream sundae that is popular in the United Kingdom. It contains ice cream, jelly, fruit, and whipped cream. Layers of these different sweet tastes are alternated in a tall glass and are topped with various kinds of syrup, nuts and whipped cream.

How the name knickerbocker became connected to this ice cream sundae is not known.
