They joined the school team in this new semester.
1.Is it ok to use the following instead?
They joined the school team this new semester. (without in)
2. If Yes to Q1, why is it OK without in in the sentence?
3.Or we may say like this:
This semester they joined the school team.
In this semester they joined the school team.
(Is in essential in this sentence)
Thank you. |

Hi dido4,
It would be more common to say:
They joined the school team this semester.
This semester, they joined the school team.
"New" is not necessary because it is implied that this is the first time they've joined. "In" is not necessary because when you say "this semester", you are in the semester.
If you really want to make it clear that this is the first time they've joined the team, you might say:
This semester is the first time they've joined the school team.
