The baby is due in November, by ____the new house should be finished .
A. which B. when

The key is "when". I wonder why "which" is wrong. Could you please tell me? Thank you very much![/code]

Which refers to things and when refers to time. Since November is the time being referred to here, when is correct:

The baby is due in November, by when (meaning by November) the house should be finished.

Thank you for your relpy, KazAV, but i am still puzzled.

Why is " which " used in the following sentence?

Similarly, the largest planned purchases month is November in which merchandise is purchased in a way that allows the December BOM figure to be at the high level needed for the Christmas selling period.

It looks like the which there refers to the planned purchases month of November, meaning it is a thing (a month) and not the actual time period (November) being referred to.

By the way, for your first post I rethought it and it is more natural to say "by which time" rather than "by when".

Hope this all helps.
