I read an article about Cheney's recent huntting accident. In this article, some guys called Cheney a "red cap" or "red hat".

I don't know exactly which word the author used because I read this one on a Chinese newspaper. I can not find out the Englsih one.

So my question is :

What does "red cap" or "red hat" mean? I only konw that Little Red Cap who is a lovely and brave girl in novel. Of course the writer does not mean that Cheney is as lovely as Little Red Cap> Very Happy

Thanks

In the USA and Canada, some hunters wear bright orange, or red clothing and head gear, hoping that they are not accidentally shot by other hunters.
A cap is a type of head covering. It is brimless, and usually has a peak.
Baseball players wear caps. Chinese cops wear caps
A hat is another type of head covering; it usually has a brim and would normally be worn out of doors.
Cowboys wear hats.

I think the actual term used in English was ' redneck ' rather than red cap or hat.

This term 'redneck' is applied to Americans who are extremely right wing politically and usually from mountain or rural communities. They believe fervently in the right of Americans to carry guns and their right to use them to defend their family and property. They will always forcefully express their opinions on anything concerning them and their communities and back it up with 'gun-law'.

Red-caps or red-hats are usually members of the Military Police responsible for maintaining discipline in the Army. I don't think this was the meaning intended whereas many people consider Cheney to be a 'redneck' in his political opinions.

i might be wrong but just an idea which might help.
