.
This pen is shorter than the one I always use.
Than is a conjunction used for comparisons:
Today seems longer than yesterday.
I can walk farther than I can run.
I can walker farther than he can.
I can walk farther than he.
I am taller than he.
Than can also be considered a preposition:
I am taller than him.
