Yes it does, but it's often used in a snotty way, when the speaker is trying to make themselves superior to the listener. It's often used to tell somebody that they are wrong.

It could be used to give a snotty or smartass reply.
E.g.
A: You know nothing about this situation because you are not from my country!
B: For your information, I majored in your country's history and language in college and lived there for 10 years. Razz

But it could also be used to give extra information you think mught be useful to the other person.
A: I'm running down to the store.
B: Have fun. But FYI, the forecast is for rain, so you might want to take a bumbershoot.
