Hi missdaredevil,
Apparently, it's from the Latin word L. lens for the genus lentis, meaning lentil, a bean with a double convex shape like so, (). Its main definition is that of an optical lens, which can be concave )( or convex ().
Biology - Genus is the classification of a group of living organisms formed from one or more species with similar characteristics.
Singular - lens
Plural - lenses
English words come from many languages, one of which is Latin.
