[1] I want to know which verb "a (large, small, etc) proportion of + plural nouns" is used with, "a singular verb" or "a plural verb".
[2] I want to know which verb "a (large, small, etc) proportion of + countable singlar nouns" is used with, "a singular verb" or "a plural verb".
[3] I want to know which verb "a (large, small, etc) proportion of + uncountable singlar nouns" is used with, "a singular verb" or "a plural verb". |

.
I see no reason why a (large) proportion of, just as a (large) part of, wouldn't function like some of or all of:
1-- A proportion of my friends are gay.
2-- A proportion of my banana is overripe.
3-- A proportion of our sugar comes from sugar cane.
