Could anyone help me with two sentences?
I am interested whether you think the first sentence is correct (There is or There are).
Do you think the last sentence may affect the first one so that it is possible (or necessary) to use singular form in the first one?
The sentences are given below:
"There's two reasons I think he's wrong. People don't act like that, and Paul would certainly never act like that."
Thank you in advance. |

There ARE two reasons [because "two reasons" is plural]; otherwise the sentences are correct. |

i would say "there are" but i have already heard people saying
"there is" when talking about several things (plural).
for example:
THERE IS A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE
or
THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE
?
I have heard both! |

"There is a lot of people" is correct because "a lot" is singular.
I agree you will hear, "There are a lot of people" when you listen to people speaking and this may be one of those "emerging uses" that the trendy English teachers are talking about.
I think you should know what is correct grammar and then you can decide whether you want to use it or not. |
