hello,I came from china.thank you for consider my qustion!I love nba very much, but I often have difficulty in understanding the news totally, can you help sovle it?
McDyess Thrives Off Bench
Joanne C. Gerstner of THE DETROIT NEWS writes, "Pistons coach Flip Saunders never was tempted to put forward Antonio McDyess into Tuesday's starting lineup against the New Orleans Hornets. He had a slot, thanks to the suspension of Rasheed Wallace, but decided to go with Dale Davis. Saunders wanted to preserve McDyess' comfort level coming off the bench, and Saunders' intuition was correct."
"Thrives Off " "slot" "coming off " these word I really don't know
and I can hardlly tell apart "off" meaning when it was used in different conditions. _________________ Yuppysea |

A "slot" is a space. There are 5 starting "slots" for the basketball team. He didn't want to put McDyess into a place with the starting five players. He wanted him to come off the bench instead. He had a space because Rasheed Wallace was suspended and couldn't play.
"McDyess Thrives Off Bench" means McDyess does very well and succeeds when he "comes off the bench" as a substitution for one of the five starting players.
I hope this helps. Ask again if it isn't clear. |

Hi Yuppysea,
I'm glad to see you here!
Yes, "come off the bench" means to get up off the bench you were sitting on and join the game. It's important to keep in mind that "coming off the bench" also means that you were not one of the starting players. You have come into the game as a replacement for another player. Players sometimes feel insulted if they are asked to "come off the bench" instead of being one of the starting players.
Here's a quote from an article published in USA Today that may help to explain this:
| Quote: |
Iverson 'insulted' by decision to have him come off bench
Iverson, who sat out the Philadelphia 76ers' 85-69 drubbing by the Detroit Pistons on Sunday after Ford told him he would have to come off the bench, said Monday that he was "insulted" by the interim coach's decision.
"A lot of people might look at it like it's a selfish thing or something like that," Iverson said. "Why wouldn't I start? I'm the franchise player here. I don't know any franchise players that come off the bench. I don't know any Olympian that comes off the bench. I don't know any All-Star that comes off the bench. I don't know any former MVP that comes off the bench. I don't know any three-time scoring champion that comes off the bench."
"I don't know any first team All-NBA (player) that comes off the bench. Why Allen Iverson? Why should I come off the bench? ... I think it is an insult to me. Who I am as a player, who I am to this organization, who I've been to this organization, that's an insult to me to come off the bench if I'm a starter." |

I hope you'll be bringing us more interesting questions like this one!
