Hello All!
I recently discovered that I believe I would enjoy traveling overseas to teach English. I live in Omaha, Nebraska and am one of those "non-traditional" students. I am completing my associate degree and will be taking my bachelor degree program on-line beginning in November. I am an admissions rep. at a local college and have experience as a guest speaker in classrooms throughout the state. I am very comfortable in a classroom and would love to travel and do some teaching.
Please give me your expert advise on a few things. I'd like to know if I can get a job without my BA, even though I am continuing. I'd alos like to know of a good TEFL course I can take on-line as it seems there are none locally here. Can I get by with the certificate or will I need the diploma program or degree? Can I find a job direct with a school or will I have to go through an agency? I'd really like to go to Japan or South America...some more rural location near the sea.
Please point me in the right direction, as all advise will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alan _________________ Alan Arthur |

University of Nebraska offers a TESOL certificate here. What is the difference between the TESOL and the TEFL program? Which will do me more good? The TESOL certificate is 5 classes (3 credits each). It doesn't seem as in depth as some of the TEFL Programs I have seen online that require 10-12 modules. Any help giving me the correct training program will be appreciated.
Here is the TESOL curriculum at UNO:
ENGL 4610/8616 Introduction to Linguistics
ENGL 4650/8656 Structure of English
ENGL 4690/8696 Topics in LinguisticsApplied Linguistics
TED 4000/8006 Special MethodsESL (or equivalent)
For the remaining three hours, students choose from the following two courses:
ENGL 4670/8676 Sociolinguistics
ENGL 4710/8716 Intercultural Communication (cross-listed as SPCH 4530/8536) _________________ Alan Arthur |

| There are some similar threads in the Teacher Forums. You could do a search or a post there as well. You might get some information about jobs in the Jobs Forums too. |
