I need some advice on grammar. I came across the following question in a drill book.
Question:
"I'm very sorry, but the manager isn't here yet. Shall I have her call you when she gets in?"
"No, I'll call back. If I call again in an hour, do you think she _____?"
(1) will arrive
(2) will have arrived
The answer, according to the book, is (2). However, I am wondering if (1) is also correct. If not, why is it? If both are acceptable, what is the difference?
I appreciate your help.
Thanks. |

.
Only will have arrived is possible. He wishes to know whether her arrival will precede his second call, and that is the use of the future perfect-- an event completed (or not) at a specified time in the future.

Thanks Mister Micawber, for your quick reply.
I have further question. If I use the verb "come," is the answer still the same? Or are both (1)and(2) correct?

.
Still, #2 is the only correct choice.
