By the way, I have one which I couldn't get in your answer.
That is as follows:

In the above 'less' is very hard for me to understand. I think it's proper to use 'a little' instead of 'less' because 'less' means negetive meaning.
Now I see 'the negative overtones would have been a good deal less.' as
'the negative overtones would have been a good deal a little.'
I wonder if I am right. Am I right?
