Hello,
can someone help me to define and explain the uses of expressions using comparatives, like "dollar for dollar"; "mile for mile"; "pound for pound," etc?
I know how to use them, but I don't know how to explain it to a Chinese English teacher. Thanks for any help you can give me,

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

Perhaps you could use the idea of ratio and proportion from mathematics.

For example:

If $1 buys 5 apples and $2 buys 16 oranges, then dollar for dollar oranges are a better buy than apples. [1/5 >1 /8 ]

Let's say $50 buys 70 cans of Brand Y, but $100 buys 120 cans of Brand X. Assuming the quality is equal, dollar for dollar Brand Y is a better buy than Brand X. [5/7 < 5/6]

If motorists traveling 15,000 miles per year need only change AXL motor oil twice, compared to five times for conventional 3,000-mile change intervals. While the initial fill may be more expensive than conventional oil, mile for mile AXL motor oil costs less.
2 changes:15,000 miles compared to 5 changes:15,000 miles
[1/7,500 < 1/3,000]

If the teacher is still confused about how these are used you can find many examples on the internet. You can use Google. Just type "mile for mile"(with quotation marks) or one of the others into the search window.

Let us know if you need more help with this.
