Hello everyone.

My question is about punctuation.
Look at the passages below. The following is a passage from an article about Magritte.

One of his famous paintings is a pipe with the words Ceci nest pas une pipe (This is not a pipe) written under it (2). A friend of his told him, Of course this is a pipe. Magritte answered, Can you smoke this pipe? No, this is not a pipe; this is a picture of a pipe.

Should a comma have been placed both before and after Ceci nest pas une pipe (This is not a pipe), because it is a direct quotation?

This may seem a trivial matter to native speakers of English, but it sticks with me as a non-native.

Best regards,

.
Please see HERE. I would post such 'trivial' questions at only one website.
