Hi Teachers,
I read that the following phrases/clauses are inappropriate, but I'm not sure why:
1) Since / From young .....
2) put up a performance ..... ('gave' is correct?)
3) perform a skit .....
4) tear uncontrollably ..... ('cry' ?)
If they're unacceptable, then how can I correct them?
Thanking you in advance for yr help. |

Since young = Since (I was) young <-- Correct
From (preposition) + young (adjective) <-- Wrong
From youth <-- Correct

put up a fight/struggle/resistance: to show great determination to oppose something or get out of a difficult situation:
Gina put up a real fight to overcome the disease.
The rebels have put up fierce resistance.
[from Longman Web Dictionary]
I am not sure why 'put up a performance' is not acceptible. Perhaps, it is not appropriate for the context of the situation described.

Each year four salesmen who sold bonds to Texas thrifts performed a skit before the Salomon triaining class.
The above example was borrowed from Longman Web Dictionary. Therefore, I believe there is nothing wrong with the phrase.
I agree with you that you change it to 'cry uncontrollably'. |

Hi Jeryl and Pinenut,
It might be that the performance is a play in a theatre. In this case we would say "put on a performance" or "gave a performance".
Welcome to the ESL Cafe Jeryl! We look forward to helping you with your questions.
