Dear teachers,
I cannot understand the meaning of the word "associations" in the following sentence. I leaned that "accociation" is an uncountable noun except as it is used in referring to a kind of organization. The answer book says "associations" here means intercourse. In the case, why plural?
"It was on the frontier that the need for personal contacts was especially strong, and it was here that some of the groundwork was laid for the subsequent developement of voluntary associations." |

It is used here the same way you might use the word "friendships."
Hope that helps - Kristi _________________ "That man is a success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much." R.L. Stevenson |
