Though I knew a lot of people dislike her Sad I want to say something about her.
She is a famous actress in china, not because of her beauty and her performance in every film, also for the rumors and the malice borne by some people towards her.
Every time as she appeared on TV in Maybellines ads, my heart will go out for her. For I dont know such a beautiful girl, how can she be that calm to cope with the intricate situation in Hollywood? Whats more? In my heart, I admire her. She is not only a sensation, a star indeed.
When she was a small girl, she began to learn how to dance and worked many times harder then the others. So, it is no wonder every film she did will involve the dance element in it, and always excellent. Some said that her performance was not that good, but we could see she was learning and improving. Some said that her English was poor, but I was tempting to say she was also learning and improving. All in all, she was trying her best for herself also for China.
In my eyes, she is exquisite and elegant, excelling many good actress in China. For she is ambitious and actually means no harm towards others, so could we sometimes show some mercy to her instead of insulting her on the web? And I know some people dislike her just because others dislike her, as a matter of fact, they even didnt think about it!

I think if she represents China it's mostly through some limber exercise in free association and the coincidence of being famous, Chinese, and heiress (or so it is said) to Gong Li.

Her ostensive predecessor had the fortune to work with the most famous of the 5th generation directors (Yimou Zhang and Kaige Chen) and so became imbricated with their program of representing China.

In my amateur opinion Ziyi is quite different. Her first movie is also with Yimou Zhang but her star-making role is with a Taiwanese/American director in a basically a-political period film aimed at an international audience. Ziyi has starred a substantial number of non-PRC films.

Though surely many Chinese look up to as an ideal of what a Chinese can be in the world today: that kind of individualism isn't specifically Chinese, perhaps.

To lighten it up, she's easily my favorite actress - an incandescent beauty. I've had a crush on her since seeing Crouching Tiger in '00.
