Hello,

I'm just wondering what tense we are supposed to use in a diary. For example, "Today is my birthday" or "Today was my birthda."

Thanks,

Nawee

When you are writing your diary, presumably towards the end of the day, it is still the same day. So you need to use the present form, "Today is my birthday." For other activities which you did during the day, you may use the past, " I went shopping in the morning, I met my friends, etc."

Generally, in diaries, people drop the subject "I" and write null-subject sentences like, "Went shopping", "Watched a movie", etc. English does not allow subjectless sentences, like some languages do. But this phenomenon is called "diary-drop", and it is allowed.
