Is either #1 or #2, possible for the blank in the passage below?
1. a
2. the
Amsterdam is ( ) lovely capital city of Holland. Its many canals are crossed by four hundred bridges and lined with trees and old red-brick buildings. In the 17th century these were the homes of rich merchants.

I think that "the" is the correct choice here. Holland has only one capital. |
