What is the difference between in the street and on the street?

I read this sentence : We used to play in the street. Can I say we used to play on the street?

And we always say I walk on that street, instead of walk in that street, right?

Thanks!

Good questions!

If I said, "I used to play IN the street," I would I actually played in the area where the cars are driven. "Playing ON the street" doesn't sound right to me - neither does "walk on the street."

I would say "on the street" to refer to building that are along a street. For example, I might say, "my friend and I live on the same street."

Hope that helps - Kristi

If "walk on the street" doesn't sound right, do I say "walk in the street"?

For example, I realized how lonely I was while walking on this busy street.

Thanks!

Sorry for the delay.

I would say "walking down this busy street."

Isn't English fun?
