Is there a difference between these two institutions, College and University? What is it?

I guess it's not exactly a question about the English language, but about the American/English culture.

Hi -

Univerities are comprised of colleges. For example, the Univerity of Minnesota has a College of Arts and Letters and a College of Education among other colleges. So a student's degree comes from the College of Arts and Letters at the Univerity of MN, for example.

We also have colleges which are merely smaller schools with a smaller number of colleges. For example, the College of William and Mary may only have 2 colleges = Arts and Letters and Humanities.

I hope that helps and doesn't confuse things futher - Kristi

Thanks a lot, Kristea.

My doubt came from the fact that, sometimes, when I'm translating an article from English to Portuguese, I see things like "students graduated from colleges and universities" and I wanted to understand what was the difference.
