Does "foreign" have a negative tone? Some Japanese professor in English says that " a foreign student" is not recommended. He suggesets using one of the following:an international student, an overseas student, a student from another country.
Any comments?

.
No, there is nothing pejorative about foreign, unless said in a negative tone of voice. Gaijins do not mind the word gaijin, either.

The alternative phrases you suggest are fine also-- and they too could be pejorative if said in a nasty tone also.

Actualy, I would agree that using "international student" etc would be better. A lot of people wouldn't like to be termed as foreigners. It's not just the tone people use when they say it, I am not even sure why it sounds so negative myself but I know that my friends and I don't like it as we prefer other expressions. It just sounds a bit offensive. Have no idea why.

Since Kova is offended by the term, I suggest that you avoid it. Some people are more sensitive than others.
