Is "never" an intensifier?
The sentence is,,,
It "never" goes the way I expect it to.

It is an adverbial alright. (never = not even once).

An intensifier as you might know is a word with little meaning and functions only to intensify the meaning of what it modifies, as in

Honestly, I don't like it. (honestly is an intensifier here)
