It was really stinking in this crazy hospital.

The patient stunk me away.

Are these sentences OK?

If not, why?

Thank YOU

If you mean that the hospital smelled bad, then you might say, "It really stunk in the hospital." If you mean that something in particular (say, the bed) smelled bad, then you might say, "The bed really stunk" or "The bed was stinking" or "The bed was stinky."

You would never say, "The patient stunk me away." Stink is not a transitive verb--no direct object. You might say, "The patien stunk so bad that I had to go away."

By the way, you can use stink to mean bad in general, not just in smell. So you might say, "That hospital really stinks" and mean that the doctors and nurses are incompetent, it is run down, it has no supplies or equipment, and so on.

Yours truly, CP
