1. Harry ________ New York for many years.

(a) has moved to
(b) has lived in
(c) has gone to
(d) had movd to

The answer is (b). How come none of the others fits in?

Thanks.

(a) doesn't work because he only moved to New York once. After he moved, he lived there. Therefore, (b) is correct. He has lived in New York for many years. (Started when he moved there, and has continued to the present.)

(c) is actually correct as well. "He has gone to New York for many years." means he does not live in New York, but he goes there on vacation. For example, every summer he goes to New York.

(d) is past perfect. There's no reason to use it in this sentence, and it doesn't work well for the same reason (a) doesn't work You could say, "He had lived in New York for many years before he visited the Statue of Liberty."

Thanks. Is #3 the same as "He has been to New York?"
