Would you please tell me what are the differences between "restrain" and "constrain"? I really cann't see.

| I can't find any major differences between the two words either. The one thing I can think of is that "constrain" often refers to being held or restricted by rules and regulations, not by physical force. "Restrain" is more common in conversation and informal writing. |

| Also in the context of self-check/ self-control/ self-restriction, 'restrain' is the commoner choice. |
