Please explain "upon the last one" in the following (A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner)
--- the foloowing ---

Then the newer generation became the backbone and the spirit of the town, and the painting pupils grew up and fell away and did not send their children to her with boxes of color and tedious brushes and pictures cut from the ladies' magazines. The front door closed upon the last one and remained closed for good.

Faulkner is not an easy writer to understand. It sounds like there is some kind of teacher or childcare worker who worked with children, but the children grew up and didn't send their children to her, so the front door, which she opened to let the children in, closed after the last one and never opened again because no more children came. If that fits the story, then it's probably what was meant.

I agree with Lorikeet.

Miss Emily gave china painting lessons in her home, but china painting went out of fashion, and then she didn't have any more students. Her front door closed behind the last student (that is, after the student left, her front door closed), and it stayed closed for the rest of her life.
