In the parentheses of the following sentence, which (has or have?) is correct? or are both used according to the context?

Jewelry was stolen from a safe in her house. The police (has/have) been searching for a month.

In the U.S.A., you would use the plural. If it is only one person, then you would say "policeman," "policewoman," "police officer," or even "cop," but not "police."

We say, "the police have..." in Britain as well.
