"Lying" is correct in this sentence.
Lie, lay, lain, lying means to be in a horizontal position. This verb is intransitive -- no direct object.
Lay, laid, laid, laying means to put something onto some surface. This verb is transitive -- it always takes a direct object.
Examples:
I lie on the couch whenever I am weary. I lay in bed last night. I have often lain on the floor to read. I am lying on my back right now.
I lay my pencil on my desk every day. I laid it on top of my book this morning. I have often laid the newspaper next to the fireplace. I am laying my glasses on the mantle as we speak. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
