Hi, Im Abdurrasyiid Alaik Sander, my friends called me Rasyid. Im in my eight semester of English Department in my college here in Kudus, central Java, Indonesia. I have come to my second chapter of my skripsi and soon will consult my third chapter. I choose to have a study on English idioms. My skripsi entitled Idiom Analysis on the Oprah Show Transcripts has been approved by my advisors and therefore hope I will soon graduate. Related to my study, I have found myself confused to analyze which are idioms and which are not. Therefore, I need native(s) to give me consideration which are the real idioms and which are not. By this e-mail I would really glad to get a help for my problem. I have marked the transcripts in red and underlined for words I suppose as an idiom. All the transcripts were downloaded from sites outside the oprah.com and I really think that they are free to be downloaded freely. I have modified and created the PDF files into three files, all with marks, and also create the zip for faster download.
I planed to classify those idioms into:
a. Neutral (when an idiom does not have any special implication in terms of meaning, neutral, slang and colloquial classifications.
b. Formal (when an idiom is used to show respect, politeness, and formality).
c. Colloquial (when an idiom belongs to or suitable for, ordinary conversation (not formal or literary)).
d. Slang (when an idiom is commonly used in talk but not suitable for good writing or formal occasions, especially the kind used by and typical of person)
Ill be glad to have anyone help to solve my problems out. I cannot give anything but thank you for your generosity and may God repay your kindness. Im looking forward for your responses. Thank you.
Regards,
Abdurrasyiid A.
