Hello,
When we wish something would happen, does it necessarily mean that we think it is unlikely to happen?
I wish she would say yes.
(I know she won't say yes.)
I wished there would be some money inside.
(I knew there wasn't any money inside.)
Thank you,

No. It also might mean that we're not sure, one way or the other. (This is different from thinking something is unlikely.)
One other way this phrase is used is to express impatience. For instance: "I wish it were time to go home" or "I wish it were Friday". |

But "wish" in those sentences are not the same as "hope", right?
I hope she will say yes.
I wish she would say yes.
I hoped there would be some money inside.
I wished there would be some money inside.
Is there any difference between "wish" and "hope" in these sentences?
Thank you,

hope, hoped, hoping, hopes
1. To wish for something with expectation of its fulfillment. _________________ Visit my Blog on a Chinese web site. I discuss many things about American culture, and the site is getting quite popular. http://mallaien.blog.sohu.com/ |
