Dear Teachers,

1. Have a nice day!
- The answer is you too! or the same to you!?

2. We just say See ya!, See you!, or catch you later! to people who are the same age with us or younger then us, right?. And we should say see you later! to people who are older than us, right?

Thanks a bunch to Teachers,

Stevenukd

1. "Have a nice day!" can be answered many ways:

"You, too!" "Same to you." "You do the same." "Have a good one / have a good day." "Thank you. Take care / take care of yourself."

2. The expressions that you mentioned, See ya / you!", "Catch you later!, are informal and are used between peers. You can also say, "Take it easy" or "So long!" or "Bye-bye!"

It is slightly more formal to say, "See you later, as you suggest. More or less equal to "See you later" would be "Goodbye / 'Bye now," "Nice to see you," or "So long for now."

If you hear, "See ya later, alligator!", you have to reply, "In a while, crocodile!", even if you are speaking with a king or president.

stevenukd - i have heard that in countries other than USA, when speaking to people older than you, there needs to be a more formal speech spoken - is that true? iitimone7

True in the U.S., too.
