Before you go hot footing it in search of a solution, get a feel
for the scope of the problem.

What does hot footing mean in this sentence?

Alexander..

I thinking it means "running off in search of" or "rushing off in search of".

(The advice is to think first, act later.)

A hot foot is a trick that can be played on someone. You put a match between the sole and the uppers of a person's shoe, with the head of the match pointing out. (You have to be a little sneaky doing it, of course.) Then you light the match with another match, and the burning match heats up the person's foot. He jumps around crazily and everyone has a good laugh.

Anyway, that's the way it worked in the old-time movies.

So hot-footing is stepping lively some way or another. And hot-footing it from one place to another is going there in a hurry, as if one's foot were on fire.
