What is the difference between the two?
-Walt Whitman's poetry was not appreciated during his own time, however/ but it is widely admired today.


Why is the underlined portion wrong?

-Independence was not achieved overnight; many years of struggle were required before the colonists won their liberality.

1. You want "but" here, since you have two independent clauses joined together. "However" is all right, but then you would write it: "Walt Whitman's poetry was not appreciated during his own time; however, it is widely admired today."

2. The word should be "liberty," which means freedom. "Liberality" refers to generousness. It's nice, but it's not what the war was fought for.
