As Alain was writing an essay on the political and economic forces that led to the Revolutionary War, Alain's pencil snapped in two.

Why can't you say: WHile he was writing...forces leading

OR: In writing... which led

?

You can say, "While he was writing...forces leading," and I would prefer it that way, so as not to repeat the name "Alain."

I would not say, "In writing... which led," because then the subject becomes Alain's pencil rather than Alain. I prefer "that led" to "which led," but I know not everyone would agree.
