If you wanted to use exempt, then you need to say what you are exempting yourself from. In this case, you are not exempting yourself from "school credit," you are exempting yourself from a class.
"I have to take either TOEFL or IELTS to exempt myself from Beginner English."
You could also say:
"I have to take either TOEFL or IELTS to get credit for Beginner English."
There is a better way to say this. I will reply again when I think of it.
